About Me:

Hi! My name is Carmelo, and I came all the way to Minnesota from Puerto Rico after the recent hurricanes! I just had a big surgery to fix up my back leg. I have some permanent screws and plates in it now to keep it straight, and I have to continue to take medication for a little while, but I hear that everything is healing great! My vet wrote a little bit more about my condition down below, for those who are interested ;)

I am a big lover--I don't want toys, I want to snuggle you! I am happiest if I can be right next to you all the time, or in my bed or crate where I can keep an eye on everyone. I will roam around, finding a spot I'm happiest with, or just following you as you do stuff around the house. I do fine with a cat roommate, but cat food is a favorite snack, so watch out! I do not do well with other dogs (yet), and I take some time to warm up to strangers. Some strangers, especially if they are tall or big, can scare me, but if they're nice and quiet and give me some treats, I get to know them ok after a little while.

I don't seem to speak much English, but I know my name really well, and I just "get" what you want me to do a lot of the time. I'm picking up on the language and commands! I am crate- and house-trained, and don't have any trouble while my fosters are at work. I don't bark unless I think there's big trouble (like when everyone got excited and was yelling when the Vikings won the divisional playoff), and I don't chew or scratch anything I'm not supposed to. I've done well in the car and on a small vacation, and I handled all my surgery stuff and medications like a champ!

My favorite food is cheese, or whatever you're eating. I actually don't like peanut butter! I would do well with anyone, but especially with someone who is home a lot and would like a lot of snuggles. Do you think you'd like to be my new family? Apply today!

About Carmello's surgery: Carmello had surgery due to a luxating patella in the right leg.
He will probably always walk with an abnormal gait because of that leg, but we expect he will be a pretty typical dog. The left knee isn't as severe as the right (grade 2/4). He may hold that leg up occasionally when the knee cap pops out of place but most times it will correct itself. He will probably develop arthritis in that knee so it is extremely important to keep him lean. He may need meds to help with pain from arthritis at some point in his life. This is a fairly common condition, especially in smaller dogs, that can be medically managed most times. We are happy to discuss Carmello's diagnosis and ongoing care more with applicants, but suffice to say that we hope he is all patched up for now!
